Broadcast Tech & Sport Group is collaborating with the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) on a new event – The UK Media Technology Conference 2022 – to be held at BFI Southbank, London, on 29 June 2022.

The UK Media Technology Conference 2022 brings together leading industry technologists to present and debate topics affecting the industry in 2022. Broadcast Tech & Sport Group will work alongside the SMPTE board to operationally deliver the new networking and content-led event.

This event will be the first time the SMPTE UK section has had a regional conference since 2016. The conference will be open to both members and non-members of SMPTE.

The programme for the UK Media Technology Conference 2022 will be “unashamedly technical”, says SMPTE.

The conference focuses on two distinct areas:

  • Creative Technology, including virtual production; cloud technology for production and post, and next-generation studio pipeline
  • Technology Infrastructure, tackling questions such as whether a standards-based or proprietary approach is best for practical IP studio builds; whether to choose public cloud or private virtual infrastructure; and what use is 5G for broadcasters?

The one-day conference is aimed at senior technology leaders and their teams in broadcast, production and media distribution companies, as well as graduates and students entering the industry.

Attendance will equip individuals with a practical understanding of upcoming technologies, their strengths and weaknesses, and the experiences others have had in implementing them.

Discounted tickets will be available for junior engineers. Each full-price ticket qualifies the purchaser to buy two discounted tickets, making it possible for a senior engineer to bring two junior team members to the conference.

A limited number of complimentary tickets will also be available for students.

You can register for your ticket at https://www.smpte.org/section-events/smpte-uk-media-technology-conference-2022?hsLang=en.

The UK Media Technology Conference is the latest event to be created and curated by the Broadcast Tech & Sport Group. The Group produces a wide range of conferences including the annual Broadcast TechFest; Broadcast Sport Innovation Forum; Broadcast Sport Content Summit; and the Broadcast Sport Leaders’ Summit, as well as industry-leading awards, the Broadcast Tech Innovation Awards and Broadcast Sport Awards.

Charlotte Wheeler, director of the Tech & Sport Group, said: “We are very excited to be joining SMPTE for this event programme and nurturing further the relationship we have had for a number of years now. We are looking forward to seeing new faces and reconnecting with others during the event in 2022.

“Our relationship with SMPTE expands beyond The UK Media Technology Conference 2022 to the Media Production & Technology Show, which returns to London Olympia in 2022. We will be partnering with SMPTE on a new Technology Theatre, which expands the remit of the show, brings new contacts and discussions together, and ensures our creative tech market are abreast of the all-important tech standards in the sector.”

John Ellerton, newly elected UK SMPTE chair, added: “We are delighted to be hosting a dedicated SMPTE UK event in 2022 and can’t wait to share with you our plans for the content and partners working with us. Partnering with the Broadcast Tech & Sport Group enables us to expand our reach and deliver an exciting event for all delegates attending.”
