Move into cinema cameras comes after acquisition of Red last year

Nikon ZR

Nikon has moved into cinema cameras with the launch of the ZR.

Coming almost 18 months after the acquisition of Red Digital Cinema, which continues as its own brand and also launched a cinema camera this week, the ZR uses Red’s IPP2 colour science and R3D RAW recording, alongside ProRes RAW and Nikon RAW.

Other features include a 6K full frame sensor capable of capturing up to 6K 60p, 4K 120p, and FHD up to 240p, has a dual base ISO of 800 and 6400 (RAW/NLOG), and is equipped with a large 4” 1000 nit monitor. The ZR also supports 32-bit float audio recording with both built-in and external microphones, and has AI-powered subject detection and tracking through Nikon’s Z9 tech.

This is the first entry in what will be the Z Cinema range of Nikon cameras, and it will be the smallest of these models. It has been designed with the cinema, high-end production and creator markets in mind.
