The Foundry has added layered Photoshop .PSD import and export to its digital paint tool.

Mari 1.4 also offers colour management with OpenColorIO and triplanar projection.

The Foundry said that software will allow artists to paint detailed, multi-layered textures directly onto 3D models and solve commonplace VFX problems.

The Foundry chief executive Bill Collis said: “Our aim is for Mari to handle all aspects of high-end digital paint and this latest release brings that much closer.”

Mari 1.4 is available immediately and runs on Windows and Linux. It is priced at $1,980/ £1,200 with maintenance costing $330/£200.
