Sky has today confirmed that it will begin showing ultra high definition (UHD) content from next year.

At the unveiling of the broadcaster’s new SkyQ set-top box this morning, Sky said a UHD service would be available to its customers “later in 2016”.

Sky said will be “the UK’s most comprehensive UHD service” and will focus on sport, films and entertainment.

A spokesperson told Broadcast that the UHD channels would initially be delivered via satellite but declined to provide further information about the technical aspects of its UHD offering.

The broadcaster described SkyQ as “the biggest reimagining of Sky in our history”.

The SkyQ set-top box will be launched early next year.

As well as being capable of handling UHD content, it will allow viewers to sync recordings with mobile devices, stream content to three TVs and two tablets at the same time, and record up to four programmes simultaneously.
