Forthcoming BBC1 drama is adapated from Rosa Rankin-Gee’s novel

Universal International Studios, part of Universal Studio Group, is to join Sister as co-producer of BBC1 drama The Dream Lands

The co-production is the first partnership between the two UK-based companies and follows the Sister being commissioned last year by the BBC to produce the climate-change focused six-parter.

Adapted by Kayleigh Llewellyn from Rosa Rankin-Gee’s novel Dreamland, it is set in a dystopian Margate in 2039, where temperatures are soaring and a young woman is living a life of crime to keep her family alive.

Universal International Studios’ executive vice president of global scripted series Kelsey Balance said: “The Dream Lands is a captivating exploration of the human spirit brought to life by Kayleigh Llewellyn’s unique vision. We are proud to partner with the exceptional team at Sister for this must-watch BBC series.”

Sister creative director scripted and executive producer Naomi de Pear said: “We are so delighted to have our brilliant colleagues at Universal International Studios support as we bring Kayleigh’s epic, funny and heartfelt vision to life.”

The executive producers for Sister are de Pear and Holly Pullinger alongside and Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC and Llewellyn and Rankin-Gee. The directors are Erika Calmeyer and Myryam Raja.

NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution will handle international sales for the series.
