Women in Film & TV (WFTV) has honoured a quintet of on-screen talent-led documentary makers for its latest Pat Llewellyn Bursary Fund.

This year’s grant, which is sponsored by the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, All3Media and the Welsh government, was handed to talent-led documentary projects that could sit on a UK broadcaster.

Eirlys Bellin and Caitlin Kelly are the Welsh winners, who each get £10,000. Bellin’s presenter is Katy Marks and Kelly will front her own project.

Matilda Hay, Natasha Jarvis and Lauren York are the beneficiaries for the rest of the nations. Hay receives £4,000, Jarvis £10,000 and York is granted £6,000.

Hay has discovered the Scottish-Nigerian climate advocate Eunice Olumide to present her project and Jarvis’s has attached disabled Essex presenter Chelsey Jay. Alex Collins will present for York. The winners are also matched with mentors to assist with their projects.

Due to the nature of this year’s subjects, the pitches will stay confidential until commissioned.

“With the current lack of female diversity on-screen, these are voices that really need to be heard,” WFTV chair Liz Tucker said.

The fund is overseen by WFTV and was set up in 2018 in memory of award-winning producer Pat Llewellyn, who died in 2017. It’s open to all women regardless of their background or experience in TV.

This year’s bursary welcomed Netflix’s Kate Townsend, BBC3 controller Fiona Campbell, C4’s Kelly-Webb Lamb, Tim Whitwell from Shine TV and Cardiff Productions manging director Pat Younge to the committee.

Other committee members include ITV’s Sue Murphy and Nutopia boss Jane Root.

Last year’s winners included Laura Martin-Robinson mentored by Liesel Evans, head of UK factual at Raw, who is currently in production with her film for BBC Wales.

Many of the winning projects from 2020 are still in development due to Covid-19 delays.
