The Crown creator Peter Morgan is teaming up with Orchid Pictures and World Productions to adapt Ira Levin’s thriller novel The Boys from Brazil for Netflix.

The 5 x 50-minute conspiracy drama will star Jeremy Strong as Holocaust survivor and Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann, who sets about trying to expose that a Nazi scientist believed long dead is still alive and active.

Part historical thriller, part moral reckoning, Levin’s 1976 novel is set across three decades from the immediate aftermath of WW2 through the political turbulence of the 1970s.

August Diehl (Inglourious Basterds) will play the Nazi scientist while Daniel Brühl (Rush) and Gillian Anderson (Sex Education) will also star.

Morgan writes the series, which will be exec produced by his creative colleague from The Crown Suzanne Mackie, Orchid Pictures’ founder and chief executive, and World Productions’ Simon Heath (Line of Duty) alongside The Crown and Black Doves director Alex Gabassi who will both exec produce and helm the series. The Crown alumni Oona O’Beirn and Andy Stebbing will serve as producers.

It marks the second Netflix project to emerge from Mackie’s Orchid, which launched in 2020 with a first-look deal with the streamer, after Agatha Christie’s The Sevel Dials Mystery.

Mackie said: “Building on his extraordinary work with The Crown, Peter continues to examine the political and emotional forces which, through the 20th century, have moulded the world we live in today.

“That he does so via the intimate human stories within the sweep of history makes his storytelling powerfully relatable.

“We’re thrilled to have assembled such an exceptional team, both in front of and behind the camera and to be working with the super-talented director, Alex Gabassi again for this new limited series for Netflix. We can’t wait to bring Peter Morgan’s bold reimagining of Ira Levin’s The Boys from Brazil to the screen.”

Filming will begin next month in the UK, Germany, Bulgaria and Spain.

World Productions is behind BBC1’s Line of Duty and Vigil.
