Camera and smartphone gimbal manufacturer Zhiyun has released a modular design gimbal, Crane 3S, which builds on the functionality of the Crane 3 Lab gimbal. This introduced built-in image transmission and new ways of holding and controlling a gimbal for creative filmmaking.

The principal upgrade for the Crane 3S is it’s been reengineered with new ‘super’ motors to handle cameras up to a 6.5kg, including the Canon EOS 1DX, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras, Canon Cinema EOS, Sony FS and FX series, and Red Digital Cinema Cameras.

The modular aspect of the Crane 3S is in the motor axis and handles, to adapt to different sized cameras, and to ensure compatibility with motorised dollies, jibs, cable cams, Easyrig, and more.

A newly-designed locking system can lock all three axes, apparently without noticeable swinging. Larger lens support has been added to the zoom and focus system.

It also has a detachable second handle, with two options – the EasySling Handle and the SmartSling Handle. The EasySling handle extends the grip for more comfort upright and underslung operation, while the SmartSling handle features a control panel and OLED screen, for direct camera and gimbal parameter adjustment.

The device can run up to 12 hours with three batteries, or can be extended to 18 hours of runtime with a six battery configuration.
