Ben Zand’s indie Zandland is to launch a YouTube docuseries which it will fund, produce and distribute in-house.

Human will be hosted by Zand and focus on extraordinary people or communities living through struggle with the aim to challenge people’s preconceptions. Seven episodes, which will drop monthly, will examine gang warfare in Chicago, jail life in Colorado, a nudist retreat in New Orleans, the Israel-Gaza conflict, a white-only towns in post-apartheid South Africa, Brazil’s intimacy industry and a remote tribe in Central Africa.

Former BBC producer and presenter Zand said: “Human is a significant milestone in Zandland’s story. We’re not waiting around to be commissioned or asking for permission from gatekeepers, we’re commissioning the content we want to see ourselves and delivering it straight to the consumer.

“With this series, we are giving audiences raw, unfiltered access to communities and conversations they’d never normally see - not to sensationalize, but to humanize in an increasingly divided global society. This is a series you’d never see on TV.”

The indie, which is behind Channel 4 docs The Great Amazon Heist and Cult of Conspiracy: QAnon, is based in Liverpool, London and Los Angeles. It is one of C4’s 24 N&R-based indies taking part in its Business Boost scheme this year.
