Hackney post house Time Based Arts reveals its grade on the Sky Original comedy

This 8x30-minute comedy was created by Billie Piper with writer Lucy Prebble. The story follows former child-star Suzie Pickles (Piper) as her life is upended after being hacked.

The DPs on the series were Tim Sidell (episodes 1-4, 6 and 8) and Luke Bryant (episodes 5 and 7). It was shot on the Arri Alexa for a 2K 16:9 delivery. Technicolor edited the series, while Time Based Art’s colourist Simone Grattarola delivered the final DI in DaVinci Resolve.

Grattarola said: “In terms of references, we used old Italian horror films and 70s cop shows, but we still created and refined a show LUT in pre-production to help bring them all together, so they didn’t feel too alien. It’s quite unusual for a series to have so many contrasting looks, but it worked.

“It was just great fun applying different references and trying things out. Usually, you might have ideas that don’t translate well across different lighting conditions, and you’d be working to one brief, whereas, on this, every episode brought a new challenge and a unique flavour.

“Even within those episodes, there were different tones and emotions to consider. In episode 4, there’s a dream sequence that runs through it with lots of flashbacks. Each flashback has a slightly different retelling of how she imagined the past, and we reflected this in the grade. It is a very different series to anything that you’ll see.”

All episodes of I Hate Suzie are available to watch on Sky and NOW TV.
